Majolica St Clement 1920's LOURDES Water Pitcher or Jug

St Clement is one of the oldest ceramics factories in France. Based in Luneville in the eastern part of France this factory started in the mid 1700's and produced high end wares for the nobilty including Marie Antoinette. Having gone through many owners this factory has produced some of the most prestigious and lovely pieces and indeed between 1864 and 1876 Emile Galle and his father worked at this factory.

This wonderful Lourdes pitcher dates from the 1920's, from the mark on the underside and is a beautiful homage to the fabulous work of a prestigious long lived enterprise.

These pitchers or jugs were used mainly for decoration but also for holding water and are sometimes known as 'Absinthe' pitchers as the very potent aniseed aperitif has ice, sugar and water in it.

This would look lovely as a centre piece on any summer's table holding water or lemonade.

There are no cracks, there is some crazing in the glaze. It sits beautifully especially in the sunshine.

It weighs 0.644 kilos about 1lb 6.7 ozs and stands 18 cm high about 7 inches.

This pitcher or jug will be securely wrapped and sent insured and tracked parcel post.
