Full WMF mark on the base - Ostrich.
Good sized tray or salver that has the most beautiful patina and is in good antique condition.
It has two hole handles and has been decorated on the outside with secessionist motifs.
The design has been inspired by both floral German Art Nouveau, German Jugenstil and by linear Art Deco.
Founded in 1880 by the merger of two existing German companies, the WARTTEMBERGISCHE METALWARENFABRIK or WMF was, around 1900, the world's largest producer and exporter of household metalware, mainly in the JUGENDSTIL and Secessionist style.
It was the secessionists aim, through its use of the methods of mass production, to make artistically designed, contemporary Jugenstil objects of daily use (such as candlesticks, ashtrays, lamps, beakers, vases, planters, jardinieres. tea and coffee sets) accessible to a broad selection of the public.
This is a good sized tray measuring 41 cms or 16 1/8 inches long and 22.5cm or 8 7/8 inches wide.
This exquisite tray has seen a little life. There are minor dents in the surface, there is signs of use and wear, it is very slightly bent on one handle.
It quite a substantial piece but is not too heavy,
This is an important piece of WMF manufacture in the early 20th century.
It weighs 500 grams just over 1 lbs 6 ozs and will be posted well wrapped and via our tracked and insured parcel post.
